Our Engagement Pictures

Our Engagement Pictures – The Ring

We met in high school, and got engaged in college – it seems like an eternity ago that these were taken, but I want to record what I still remember about the day Aaron proposed and the day we took our engagement pictures so future me can remember, and I can share them all with you!

It all started with this ring – well not really. When we got engaged, we couldn’t afford a real engagement ring, so we bought one on Etsy that was MUCH more affordable than most. Eventually, the setting got too loose and you could hear the stone rattle inside it. The other issue with that ring was that we couldn’t find a wedding band that we liked to go with it. So off to the jewelry store! I’ve never purchased anything from a real jeweler before or since then, but it was so much fun to go pick my engagement ring out together. I know that might be a little unconventional, but I am so glad we got to share that experience.

Destination #1 – Ballard High School

We scheduled our engagement photos for some time in July, I think. Not a great idea in Kentucky. It was HOT! We were sweating through our engagement picture outfits after about 4 minutes outside. I think our photographer did a great job hiding that! The first pictures we took were at the base of the band tower where we built our relationship. See…we met in marching band. Yep, we’re that couple!

Some of my students don’t believe me, but we went to Ballard High School. Which is the same exact pronunciation and spelling as our last name! Yes – Aaron did get tired of people asking him if he was related to the founder of the school (he wasn’t).

This is the performing arts part of the campus Рwe spent MANY hours here. I was in band and choir, and he was in the band as well, so we always had concerts, contests, and events. Many, many, many hours.

Eventually, we made our way into the courtyard, which is an architectural feature that Ballard is somewhat famous for. It’s a really pretty, airy open space in the middle of the school.

The necklace I’m wearing is a gift that Aaron got me ‘just because’. I had mentioned that I wanted a locket, and he took it upon himself to get one engraved for me with my future initials. It was so sweet, and I’ll never forget when that package came in the mail. I had no idea what it was, and was so surprised and fell even deeper in love with him!

Destination #2 – Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen

This next set of pictures at a local chain that we spent many of our ‘fancy’ dates at:¬†The Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen. Technically, our first ‘date’ was at Taco Bell (classy, I know!), but we didn’t think that would look so great in the photos. And as usual, Aaron got little kid ice cream: bright blue is his favorite flavor. Our photographer was APPALLED that it was turning his teeth blue and basically told him not to eat anymore!

We are perhaps the world’s worst couple to photograph. We’re both a little awkward, and the restaurant was open for business as usual, so we were surrounded by regular people just eating ice cream and pie. At one point, Aaron wanted some of my lemon sorbet (yum!), and our photographer asked me to feed it to him. Ahh all the awkward. Oh well – we had a blast anyway!

After some ice cream to cool us off, we were off to a local park to get some pretty nature shots. This ended up being my favorite place and my favorite photos of the whole session.

Destination 3 – Park

The sun was setting, and we were finally getting to cool off. I think I actually unzipped my dress in the car so I could blast AC on it – we were driving around in his old Saturn SL2, which didn’t run that well in the first place, so I’m not sure how much cooler I actually got. My fake eyelashes were coming off from the heat and sweat, but Aaron didn’t care. And as soon as I looked at him (as usual) all of my insecurities went away. Seriously love that man.

I hope someday we can take another picture on a swingset like this with our kids. What a cute way to document our relationship through time!

One of my absolute favorite photos of the whole session was when our photographer mentioned she could get some great shots if we could go stand in the river. It had been pretty stuffy so far, and I was so happy to be able to do something a little more down to earth. The trees in Kentucky are HUGE and so pretty in the background of this picture.

I’m generally ALWAYS smiling if I’m around Aaron and we get to talk to each other. He makes me happy – so, so happy. Our photographer encouraged us to take a serious photo without us smiling, and it was HARD, ya’ll! She tried several times that evening to capture the ‘I’m so in love with you’ look, but we never really got it. I couldn’t look at him and not giggle or smile! Eventually, she had us close our eyes and try not to laugh, and it worked!
