Updating the Master Bedroom for Baby’s Arrival (Big Bedside Tables!)

Master bedroom updates - getting ready to share our room with our new baby, and why larger bedside tables are always better! Concrete and Lace

The nesting bug bit me hard this weekend. It started with not having a place to put my water bottle since my bedside table was so full of other things, and ended with us completely rearranging our bedroom. Big bedside tables for the win! It needed to happen – Baby B is going to be here in about 2 months and the room wasn’t ready for her. Now it’s much closer!

First Update – Big Bedside Tables!

See – I think bedside tables are comically small. Think about all the things you put on them! Cell phones, cell phone chargers, water bottles, vitamins, reading lamps, laptops, nighttime reading books, etc. I never have enough room on mine despite the fact that I clean it constantly and have an organization system in the two drawers below. There’s just too much stuff and not enough room.

We’ve had the same tables for years, and though they are beautiful and well made, they just aren’t big enough to be functional. You can see even way back when we moved in (when this picture was taken), we were struggling for space. Just our tiny lamps were taking up a huge amount of the space available. The addition of baby gear with no more space left me wondering how I was going to make it work!

So naturally, it was off to Target we went! We’ve looked at the outlet malls, at thrift stores, and even big furniture stores, but couldn’t find anything that would fit. We needed something pretty low to the ground, somewhat thin, good for organizing, and relatively cheap. After looking at the different units and colors in store, we headed home to place our order. They didn’t have enough of the kind that we wanted, but we could pick it up at another store the next day, so home we went!

I love Target pickup. We walked in Saturday morning, there was no line, and they helped us load the items that they had pre-picked into our cart. It was the quickest, easiest trip to Target ever! Anyway, we drove them home, and got to building. Aaron and I have built a lot of flat-pack furniture (love you IKEA, Target, etc) and pretty much dread building furniture with a passion. It always takes way too long, is too complicated, etc. But these were a breeze to put together.

They’re the 13″ model of their cube organizer, which I think every big box store has a version of. I like this one in particular though, because it has a slightly thicker outer edge which I think makes it look more like furniture and less like a temporary solution. I’ve seen some super cute ways to dress these up on Pinterest as well.

This layout is what we started with when we began to rearrange (this time). Anybody else out there love the feeling of rearranging a room? There’s something about not making and drastic changes, but feeling like you walked into a brand new space that just feels good! Anyway, we had our bed on the longest uninterrupted wall facing the closet (single door) and the bathroom (double doors).

After thinking about how to set up the room for a little while, and how to incorporate a bassinet, we decided to move some things around. The bed now fits snugly between the windows with the new bedside tables on either side, the bassinet closest to my side of the bed, and our tv and dresser directly opposite the bed. It’s a big room and feels a little empty in this arrangement, but someday we’d like to put in a sofa or bench of some kind at the end of the bed. Maybe even some skinny bookshelves along the empty wall?

Once they were in, it was time to fill them up! It’s funny how switching out furniture can lead to a deep clean of the whole room. My bedside table is usually pretty organized, but now it’s spotless. Everything has a place, and I even have empty drawers! I know they’ll fill up with time, so I’m not too worried.

Apologies for the less than stellar lighting in these photos. It was dreary and raining most of yesterday, and I didn’t get home from church until the sun went down. Regardless, this picture gives you a great idea of just how much more space we have now and gives you a peek at the new lamps we bought. These are seriously hard working pieces of furniture. I tend to spend a lot of time laying bed lately, since the third trimester is leaving me feeling tired and achey. Everything I need is now at my fingertips. Big bedside tables are the bomb.

Aaron’s side is just as wonderful, with lots of hidden places to charge his many devices. No more ugly cables! He’s pretty minimalist in terms of what he likes to have by the bedside, but has been loving the new drawers. He can throw all of his ‘ugly stuff’ in them and suddenly everything looks really clean.

Second Update – New Linens!

I feel like every time I write about our bedroom, I’m talking about how we got new bed linens. But when your giant 80lb dog sleeps with you, they go through some abuse! I washed both of our comforters this weekend, trying to get them to look less dingy, but to no avail. Not even OxyClean could help me. Back to Target to get some affordable and pretty new soft snugglies for our bed.

Tabby certainly likes them. She spent most of this weekend playing with her doggy friends at her daycare (yes, we’re those dog parents), and was pooped by the time she got home Sunday evening. It’s my last weekend before the baby comes without much going on, so Aaron and I decided to just take some time together and enjoy each other’s company. We missed her like crazy though, and are both so glad she’s home.

Third Update – New Lamps!

Aaron actually picked these out! I’ve been lamenting our (previous) lamps for months now, and it’s been time to replace them. They’re the same ones we bought for less than $10 years ago and have had since our first apartment all the way back in Morehead, KY! Those are some well traveled lights!

While we were picking up our Target order, I mentioned I wanted to look at what was available in terms of lamps. We walked over to the lighting section, and I asked him which ones he liked. He immediately pointed to the white capiz ones we ended up with. While I wasn’t completely convinced, I didn’t really like any of the other options and he so rarely has an opinion about home decor, we went ahead and bought them.

They’re so light and pretty with lots of texture. I was thrilled with them by the time we got them home. He has great taste! I think he honed in on something that really resonates with me though. At one point in our apartment, I looked around and EVERYTHING that we owned was either white, grey, or a dark wood. There was no color – no variety! So when we moved into our current home, I promised myself we would use more color in every room. I think I swung too far to the other side though, and didn’t have enough neutral elements.

Aaron mentioned that he liked the lamps because although they are white, they have a bit of dimension to them. It’s not a plain white lamp, but instead something a bit more visually interesting. Isn’t he a catch? Putting into words something that I never would have been able to. Maybe he should take over picking most of our decor items out!!!

Fourth Update – Baby B’s Bassinet and Art!

We’ve had Baby B’s bassinet for a few months now. Recently we got a new mattress for her as well as some super soft sheets to get ready for her arrival. She’ll probably be sleeping close by in the first few months, so it’s nice to have her bassinet in our master bedroom. We also needed to hang our outlet mall mirror. It looks so much cleaner, and is most important much more safe for Baby B.

After another trip to Target (anybody noticing a trend here?) we picked up some art to hang above the bassinet. Some of those pictures are just placeholders until I make some art for them, but the hello sign, the floral art at the top, and the picture of the house are all from Target. The canvas in the middle is from Hobby Lobby…I think. I bought it a long time ago (maybe around 2 months pregnant?)

At the same time, we found this trio of peaceful blue and tan prints at Target as well. They’re hanging on the ’empty’ wall between the bathroom and the closet, and fill out the space beautifully. I love the calmness of the colors and the bright white mats. I loved our bedroom before, but I really love our bedroom now!

How about you? Do you love re-arranging furniture? Do you feel like you are constantly buying new bedding? Does your 80lb dog sleep with you? Tell me in the comments! I’d love to hear from you 🙂

  1. i love, love, LOVE the lamps. just ordered them. question for you – did you get the lamp shade and harp from target too? which did you buy?

    1. Thank you so much! We adore them as well. We got the lamp shade from Target too, and their website says they sell lamp harps but we couldn’t find them. I ended up going to Home Depot to pick some up but bought two different sizes 🙁 Amazon to the rescue though and two days later the harps were installed. If I’m being completely honest, I let one of the shades just sit on top of the lightbulb for a few days since we use LEDs and they don’t get hot! 😉 We ended up with 8″ lamp harps and two of Target’s simplest white drum shades and we love them!
