Nursery Dreams!

I’ve had the weirdest, most vivid dreams you can imagine lately! Pregnancy brain I guess. I’ve been thinking a lot about where our little one will lay her head once she is finally her in April, and it led to brainstorm this post. I don’t think we’ve ever shown a picture of this room before besides the one when we bought the house.

Those purple walls are covered with a sticky adhesive at every edge of the squares. Goo gone? Nope. Magic eraser? Nope. Soap and water? Nope. Hot soap and water? Nope. Every cleaning product in our house? Nope. KILZ? NOPE. So we decided to wallpaper. I would have loved to do the ‘right’ thing and get it cleaned off and painted, but not even sanding it down could make the sticky go away. Yay Target to the rescue! Nowadays it looks more like this:

We have a 5 more months until Baby B is here, but some big renovations between now and then, like completely ripping out all of the carpet and laying hardwood floors upstairs (including in the nursery). We’re crazy, we know. Even though we got our Sneak Peek results at 9 weeks that says we’re safe to go pink-crazy, we’ve actually decided to go with a pretty gender neutral nursery. I’ve never really been a girly girl with all pink everything, so it didn’t feel right to bring our daughter into a room like that.

We’ve definitely waited a little while to get started on the nursery, since I was a little worried we weren’t going to make it this far (what mom-to-be isn’t?) and didn’t want any bad luck by starting too early. It’s weird, though. Usually we can come up with EXACTLY what we want for a space in terms of ideas or a key fixture that will anchor the design. But this one…it’s been really hard to figure out what direction we want to go in. Maybe it’s because it’s the first space we’ll be designing for someone other than us, but it’s probably more because I’m working 13 hour days and am still dealing with morning sickness at 16 weeks. Either way, it will get done and we finally have a vision.

I think we’re going towards an adventure themed space, with lots of encouraging sayings on the wall that can grow with her. I’ve never really been a ‘cutesy’ baby person, so it seems like a good direction to go in. We’re thinking green walls, dark wood floors, white trim, natural elements, and a few fun kid things thrown in. It’s a pretty small room, so it has to be functional as well.

We love the idea of a navy dresser, and the we’re going to paint an inexpensive IKEA crib white. The glider we have picked out is pretty affordable as well. Other than that, there aren’t any big purchases (besides the floors), so it should come together pretty quickly. We actually found a pretty nice dresser on Craigslist for $50 a few months ago that we’ve been saving for Baby B.

We’re super hyped about the brick pattern wallpaper we found at Target that will be covering up the wall with all the sticky residue, and of course super excited about our little one. I’m debating buying a rug for the space, but I probably will for tummy time when little B is a bit (a LOT) bigger.

Still lots to do, but we’ve done a little bit on it! Probably not a lot of updates on the nursery in the next few weeks since our lives will be laying flooring, but as soon as it’s ready for less demo and more pretty construction, we’re excited to start! Here’s a list of things we are considering/our working to do list:

  • update the baseboard trim
  • paint the walls and ceiling
  • find blackout curtains and figure out a way to hang them around the strangely shaped window
  • remove the carpet
  • install new bamboo floors
  • buy and paint the crib
  • add more lighting
  • paint the dresser and move it upstairs into the nursery (that thing is HEAVY)
  • replace the ceiling fan with the one we bought a few months ago
  • buy a glider
  • install a built-in closet system for tiny clothes
  • paint the closet doors a fun color?
  • add trim to the closet doors?
  • add crown molding
  • buy all the baby things
  • make a mobile with my Cricut
  • hang art

It’s crazy to think that in 5 short months, we’ll have a little one to hold in our arms, and we’ll be a family of three humans and one dog. I’m so excited to start this next chapter of our lives. I hope the nursery coming together is as much fun as it has been planning! Do you guys have memories of your childhood bedroom? Or did you tackle a WAY too big renovation before your little one came along? We’d love to hear from you!
